A nimble, boutique law firm

advising on banking, restructuring & special situations

Our name combines two key words which highlight why we opened the firm – Freiheit, German for freedom, and Libertas, Latin for liberty.

What We Do

We are a London-based firm of solicitors acting for funds, corporates, trustees, directors and insolvency practitioners. We advise on banking, restructuring and insolvency matters. We work collaboratively with other legal providers to ensure our clients have access to a wider selection of legal services, including employment, property, bank regulatory, disputes, capital markets, and corporate advice.

Our Ethos

Our aim is to place the client’s interest in the forefront of everything we do. We are conflict-free to do high-quality work with the liberty to offer our services without the need to achieve artificial billable hours or revenue targets. By placing client service above metrics of profit and focusing on the client’s interests, our truly independent advice is aimed solely at finding solutions to problems and sustaining long-term client relationships. We aim to keep our costs base as low as possible to avoid the need to load those costs onto clients.

Our founding partner

Stephen Phillips

“I have been working in the restructuring field since the late 1990s when I travelled as a young lawyer to Singapore expecting to spend my time on banking and project finance work. The Asian Currency Crisis intervened, and I was hooked on working in the restructuring field. I see it as ‘the practice of law’ as the issues and solutions are wide and varied.”

“The work is constantly changing as economic problems and sectoral stress tend to be ever moving. Just when you feel you have a handle on one area, the stress ebbs, only to be replaced by another sector. The key themes in the work tend to be risk and stress. Whether it is a high-risk investment or a board under pressure, clients tend to look to a lawyer to relieve some of the burden and provide practical solutions.”
